How To Create Categories on your Home Page
If you’re an Artist or Gallery, Art Storefronts strongly suggests that you set up your home page as a gallery of Subject Matter Categories. This is so important that we’ve included it in each of the setup guides for our Artists (How To: Get Started and Download the setup Guides). We’ve written a Blog (Site Optimization Lesson 1: Your Home Page Should Be A Gallery Of Subject Matter Categories) about this subject and we’ve also included it in the Site Auditor (a list that focuses on making sure your website follows the best practices Art Storefronts has put in place in an attempt to make you more successful).
We want to make it clear that this process is quite long. There are several steps you’re going to have to follow to make sure that your home page is set up properly and works correctly in conjunction with the rest of the pages you set up. In an effort to help everyone understand this process a little bit better we’ve come up with a metaphor that we will be using throughout this entire process ([Master Article] [For All Artists and Galleries] How To: Set Up your Home Page Correctly). As we walk you through this process, we’re going to use a brick and mortar store metaphor.
As a consumer, you have been to a brick and mortar store. You also understand that there are thousands of pieces that go into building and maintaining a store. Setting up your site correctly also has multiple pieces to it. Right now, we’re going to focus only on the home page specifically.
In terms of our brick and mortar metaphor, you can think of your Art Storefronts website as your actual store. It’s your building. Inside of this building there are several sections that go into making it a successful brick and mortar store. When we talk about setting up your home page correctly, we need you to think of your home page as the shelves within your store. The shelves are where you’re going to put your products. We need to make sure they’re sturdy and easy to access.
If you’re ready how to set up your home page (shelves) properly, please follow the directions below.
- Log in to your Art Storefronts Control Panel and find the Product Gallery page that is set as your Home Page. In our case, our home page is titled Shop Art. Yours should be of the same name unless you have gone in and made changes or altered the basic set of pages on your website.
Please Note: Product Gallery pages WILL NOT allow you to upload images. Remember, this specific page is just going to allow you to create your shelves. - Before moving on, make sure you are on the tab labeled Info. This is the only tab that is going to allow us to work on the basic information of the page that is going to help us set up our categories properly.
- Scroll down the page and find the section labeled Name. Here you need to make sure the title of the page is Shop Art. DO NOT change the name of this page! If you want to be aligned with our proven, best practices, this page needs to be named Shop Art.
Best Practise: The reason we do not want to change the page name is because we’re looking for a Call to Action. This is important because we want people to be able to easily recognize and know where they need to go to begin buying art from your site. There should NEVER be any confusion or distraction about where a customer needs to click to start shopping.
- If you look down a little further, you’ll see a section labeled Layout. Here we provide our customers with three different options. The first is Traditional. This simply shows the categories in basic squares. The second is Clean which is meant to look more like a gallery. The final option is Collage which arranges your images in a collage. You can choose any one of these options for your site based on your preferences and needs.
- After you have confirmed that the name of the page is correct, scroll down a little further and find the section labeled Display Choice. You will find a drop-down menu here and from that menu, you MUST select Keywords as Categories. Selecting the Keywords as Categories option is important because it allows you to create a category on your home page that you will be effectively using as a shelf.
Warning: If you do not choose Keywords as Categories in the drop-down menu, this process WILL FAIL and your home page will be set up INCORRECTLY and WILL NOT function as normal.
- Right below the Display Choice section, you will see a section labeled Keywords. This is where you’ll create the actual categories for your home page! In this box, you need to enter the names of the categories you want to appear on your live site.
Best Practise: When you enter your category names, they need to be typed out exactly as you would like them to appear on your Home Page. For example, if you want your category names to be capitalized, the keywords you enter MUST be capitalized. To Separate your keywords, you must use a hyphen.
If you have a multi-word keyword (read as a keyword that contains more than one word) you cannot include the spaces in the keyword. You will instead be required to use a hyphen. In the image below, you will see that Solo Artists is hyphenated. This is because it is a multi-word keyword. If you fail to use hyphens you will find that your categories pull incorrect images or no images at all. Please DO NOT disregard this information.
Warning: These types of Keywords ARE NOT the same as Meta Keywords. These keywords in NO WAY affect your SEO ranking or where you appear in the Google Search Stack. They are NOT the same. If you’re confused about this, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
- We will be skipping over Display Titles, Teaser Pricing and Artist Names. Instead, we need to move down to the section labeled Number of Columns. Here you can select whether you would like 3 or 4 columns per row on your website. Again, this is a personal preference item.
- Once you’ve completed the Number of Columns section, you can scroll down and find the Lead Content section of the page.
- Then, right below the Lead Content box, you will find a box labeled Ending Content. In that End Content box, you’ll want to go into detail about what inspired you to create your art and set up your website. If you have testimonials, you can put them in that Ending Content instead.
- After you’ve made all your changes and you’re happy with the information you’ve entered into each section, click the Save button. DO NOT CLICK THE BACK BUTTON! If you click the back button, you will lose all the information you just entered, and you will have to restart the process all over again.
