Setting up your home page as a gallery of subject matter categories is the single best way to make sure potential customer can quickly find what they are looking for on your site. Subject matter categories give those potential buyers a jumping off point and entices them to click around on your site and hopefully purchase. To help get this process completed in a timely manner, Art Storefronts has made it easier than ever for you to set up your home page.
Before we get into HOW to set up your home page, let's talk about WHY it's important.
Setting up your home page as a gallery of subject matter categories is one of the most important best practises that Art Storefronts recommends to its customers. The reason behind this is ease of use. You want to create categories that have a broad subject matter to them. For instance, maybe you have pictures of tigers and other animals. On your home page, you'd want to create a category labeled Animals. This tells your potential customer that you have photos of animals. Now, this customer is interested in tigers and by having a category labeled animals, you have expressed that you may have pictures of tigers. Now, you may be asking, why not make a category for ever animal you have a picture with. Sometimes, adding more and more categories can get out of hand. Customers are only going to spend three seconds on your home page looking for what they are trying to find. When we spoil people for choice they can become overwhelmed or if we offer that many options it takes them longer to find what they were looking for.
So, keep the home page simple and easy to navigate to make sure you're winning.

Set Up Your Categories
- Make sure you are logged in to your Art Storefronts Control Panel. Sometimes this is also called the Site Manager or even the Back-End of the site. Once you’re logged in, find your Product Gallery named Example Category 1 and click on it.
This type of Product Gallery is specifically used to help you create categories on your home page. This is how you’re going to populate images for display on the home page of your website.
- You’re going to be taken into one of the precreated Product Galleries we provide on your site in the beginning. Before you make any changes to the category, you need to find the tab labeled INFO. This first step is going to be important in making sure the category will appear properly on your home page.
- When you’re sure you’re on the correct tab, scroll down the page until you see the section labeled Name. Rename this page to whatever you want the category to be displayed as on the home page of your site.
Art Storefronts Recommendation: We recommend naming the first category on your home page Best Sellers. This will allow you to showcase your best-selling art and potentially grab a customers’ interest.
- After the name has been changed, you’ll scroll down further until you see a section titled Headline Text. Currently it says Example Category 1. You’ll want to change this to something less generic. It can be the same name as the page itself, can be left blank, or can be filled with any other one to two words you would like.
- Then, you need to scroll back toward the top of the page and find a tab titled SEO OPTIONS. You’ll need to click on this. You’re going to update the Smart URL to reflect a custom name as opposed to Example Category 1.
- On the next page, find the area labeled Smart URL. In that box, enter the same name as you put in the named section on the previous tab. If your page name has a two-word titled enter it in using a hyphen. For instance, my page is named Best Sellers, so the Smart URL should be best-sellers.
Please Note: SMART URLS CANNOT CONTAIN SPACES, CAPITAL LETTERS OR SPECIAL CHARACTERS. If you use any of these characters, it will break the page and it will not work properly.
- From here, click on the Save DO NOT click the back button. You will lose all the work you completed, and you’ll have to start the process over.
- When the page has saved, you need to find the tab titled ADD/REMOVE PRODUCTS, so you can begin adding images to this category and have them appear properly on the home page of the site.
- The first item you want to find is titled Filter By Store. In this drop-down menu, you can select the store you want to use. If you are only selling Open Editions, you’ll want to select your Art Print Store. If you’re selling both Open Editions and Standard Products (Originals, Limited Editions, etc.) you’ll want to choose the appropriate store, or you can choose to display ALL the images at once from all stores.
- Once a store has been selected you can also choose a category from the specified store if you want to dive even deeper and limit the number of images you want to choose from. The field to do this is titled Filter By Category.
- Finally, there’s one more section you can use to search the images in your warehouse. It’s called Filter by Keyword. If you have added keywords to the Search Keywords for your images (NOT THE SEO META KEYWORDS- THESE ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT) you can type a keyword in this box.
- After you’ve chosen how to want to pull images, you can click the button titled APPLY.
- Scroll down the page and you should see that several images have populated for you. You’ll need to go through these images and decide which ones to feature in this specific category. You’ll put a checkmark next to each image you want added to this category.
- When you’re happy with the images you have chosen, scroll back up and find the button titled ADD SELECTED. When you click on it, it’s going to add the images you put a checkmark by to the category you’re working on.
- If, instead, you find all the images that have appeared should go into your specified category, look at the page and find the section labeled Bulk Select. It is a drop-down menu where you can choose to select ALL or None. If you select All, it will add a checkmark to every image and then you can click the ADD SELECTED button to add them to the specified category.
- If you’re satisfied with the images you have added to the category, you can begin sorting them into your preferred order. To do this, scroll up the page and find the tab labeled View & Sort Products and you can click on it.
- You’ll see the images you added to the category lined up in no specific order. From there, you can drag and drop the images into the order you want them to appear in the category itself. Please keep in mind that the image you place in the first slot will appear as the thumbnail on your home page.
- This page saves itself automatically, so when you’ve finishes rearranging them, you can scroll up and click on the button titled PAGES.
- Now, you’re going to want to complete the same process for Example Category 2 and Example Category 3.
Set Up your Home Page
- Before you begin this process, you need to make sure you’ve created each of the categories you want to appear on your home page. If you’re sure you’ve done that, you need to make sure you are on your Art Storefronts Control Panel. This is sometimes referred to as the back-end of the site or the Control Panel.
When you’re sure you’re in the right place, you need to click on the page named Shop Art.
- The next page will load up and before you progress, you need to make sure you are on the tab titled INFO. If you aren’t on the INFO tab, you won’t be able to complete this process.
- Scroll down the page to the section labeled Display these Product Gallery Pages as Categories and put an X next to each category that you would like to appear on your home page.
- Now, you can scroll down the page and you can click on the Save DO NOT click the back button or you will lose the work you completed.
- Finally, you can click on the View Live Site button and you will see that your home page is set up and appears properly.
- The image I want as my thumbnail isn’t appearing properly on the home page.
- If your thumbnails are not appearing properly, your Smart URL may not be working properly. You’ll need to navigate to the back end of you site, click on the category that is having the problem and click on the tab labeled SEO Option. In that section, look at the Smart URL and make sure its name matches the name of the page itself.
- My page won’t save properly.
- You may need to use an approved browser. If you’re using anything other than Firefox or Chrome, you should stop and use either Chrome or Firefox.

- My Smart URL has a bunch of letters and numbers on the end.
- This means that the Smart URL you are trying to use is being used elsewhere on your website. The most likely culprit is you have created a folder in your Warehouse and named it the same thing as a category on your home page. You’ll need to either change the name and Smart URL of the category or you can go to your Warehouse and change the Smart URL of the folder listed there.
